Where to Eat like a "Visiting Local" in Berlin

I won't pretend that I know all the local spots in Berlin after only four days, but I am pretty impressed with the local eats we did find! So, if you're visiting Berlin and want to get off the tourist beaten track, be sure to check these places out!

Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap

Rumour has it this place created the doner kebab as we know it in Western Europe and just one bite will leave you a rumour believer. This is by far the best kebab I've ever had and I consider myself a bit of a kebab connoisseur. The perfect blend of sauces, roasted vegetables and perfectly cooked chicken will make you want to pack your bags and move to Berlin! It opens at 10am every day, but the line starts before that. If you don't want to wait for long go early and have it for breakfast instead. At some points in the day you might end up waiting two hours; but trust me, it will be worth it!

Ctarchens Ballhaus Resturant and Dance hall

We found this amazing outdoor restaurant completely by chance and had no intentions of having more than a beer or two. But the food coming out of the kitchen looked so delicious we couldn't refrain from trying and we were not disappointed! I, personally, would not leave without having at least one bite of the käse spätzle (cheese, egg noodle, similar to gnocchi). That is, if you can stop with just one bite ...

Marjellchen

As mentioned in an earlier post about how to be a local in Berlin, Marjellchen is amazing Local Eastern Berlin tradition cuisine. Following more of an Eastern European meat and potato vibe, the menu offers a number of amazingly hearty dishes that will leave you feeling very satisfied. I made the mistake of asking the owner what was good on the menu to which she proudly replied "everything." I was struggling to decide between a steak or a goulash. She responded, "One is beef and one is pork. They are very different, but both good." I went with the goulash with roasted potatoes. It was amazing! The serving size was significant and I couldn't stop eating until it was completely finished and I was completely stuffed! This is a must stop on the culinary tour of Berlin.

Marheineke Markthalle

We stopped for a "snack" in the area of Bergmannkietz and found this amazing little indoor food market. We walked around sampling a number of the stalls and everything we had was very tasty. However, one stall stood out more than others. This was a little hummus and bread stall. They offered about 20 different hummus options and we tried them all before buying a very large tub of the Roasted Tomato. With each bite there was a burst of flavour. I'm not exactly sure how they accomplished such tastiness but I'm very happy to have had the opportunity to experience it!

Overall, I know I didn't even begin to scratch the surface of all the amazing eats of this city, but what I did eat only shows that Berlin has much to offer in the way of cuisine. I have three more planned trips back to this amazing city before the end of the year, so stay tuned as I continue to discover where and what to eat!
