Living outside of your home country can be an amazing experience. It offers opportunities to travel, experience different cultures, perspectives, opinions and builds character, confidence and a strong sense of self-worth. However, it’s not easy moving to a new place and make it home. If you’re anything like me, you don’t want your whole social network to be wrapped up in your work colleagues and making new friends as an adult is not an easy task. Here are three simple guidelines to make your move a social success.
Be a "yes" person
The best advice I can give anyone moving to a new place is to always say yes! If someone you think you could be friends with asks you to do something, do it! Sure, it might be pouring down rain, making staying in and watching Netflix seem like a better alternative, but pull your butt off the sofa and get out the door. Most people will only ask once or twice before the invitations stop coming. Don't miss an opportunity!

Find a group of people with similar interests
Already got a hobby? Great! Find a group you can join. Whether it's photography, dancing, running, mathematics, or pretty much anything - there is a group for you. Meet up is a great place to start.
Don't already have a hobby? Don't you worry; there will still be ways for you to connect. When I first moved to London I reached out to SEC alumni clubs to meet people. Then I started an alumni group for my university. You might have to be creative, but there is always something you can get involved in. You might even find a new hobby in the process and you'll most definitely find some new friends.

Get details
Don't be afraid to ask people for their number and actually use it! If you click with someone, ask for a number or find him/her on social media, and send an invite to do something. It might be awkward at first, but remember you're playing the long game. You're building a life in a new place.
So, these three simple guidelines should get you building a busy social calendar and bucket loads of friends. Remember it's all easier said than done, so push yourself out of your comfort zone and just do it!
Have you moved to a new place? I'd love to hear your stories and suggestions. How did you adjust to a big move?
