Whirly Fine Wines

My appreciation for wine has grown with my age. As a kid I would only eat chicken and potatoes, but as the years have ticked by my taste buds have developed and finally after years of countless wine tastings I can taste the flavors and tell the differences between a fine wine and a cheap £5 bottle from the grocery.

Exploring London is one of my favorite things to do and the city never ceases to be full of surprises. A couple of my friends uncovered a hidden gem in Balham, South West London and lead our wine tasting pallets to Simon Newson, fine food chef, wine enthusiast and owner of Whirly Wines.

Simon's shop is picturesque from the inside out. The walls are lined with wines he discovers during his travels to different wine regions. Simon has several goals when looking for a fine wine, one of which includes finding winery on the outskirts of expensive regions. He has discovered the wines have the same quality, taste and style at a happier price point. His passions include introducing people to affordably priced wines paired with the right foods. His extensive knowledge of the wines he supplies makes his shop the best place in south London to pick up a couple of bottles for friends, dinner parties or your own private stash. Just tell him what you like or don't like and he'll pair you with a bottle you'll never forget.

If you won't take my word for it, then it's time you stop by for a wine tasting. For just 20 pounds you'll be able to try 5-6 different wine glasses. His selections are so on point he turned a non-white drinker into a big fan! On our visit we were offered the following.

Mas de Longchamp, Rose 2016. Buches de Rhone ( Organic): £15.50

Mehofer, Gruner Veltliner 2015, Wagram, Austria, ( Organic): £12.95

Domaine de Tariquet, Resreve 2014, Cote de Gascogne: £13.50

Graziano, Montevolpe, Tacai Friulano 2013, Potter Valley, Mendocino, USA: £18.75

Bonfanti, “ Venetica”, Rosso Verona IGT, Lombardy: £14.75

Simon is currently launching a food business to compliment his wine offering. If you are local to London or just passing through I strongly encourage you to check out this hidden gem. I promise you won't be disappointed!
